A recent global ranking by Million Podcasts, a leading podcast database company, placed the Africanist Press Podcast at the top of its newly released Top 100 Africa Podcasts list, published on July 21, 2026.
Million Podcasts maintains a comprehensive database with a searchable index of 2.7 million podcast shows, encompassing 62.1 million episodes produced in 180 languages across all major hosting platforms. The index is compiled using a methodology that verifies podcast hosts’ and producers’ contact information through automated checks and direct outreach, and is designed to record and measure listener demographics, geographic distribution, sponsor history, and engagement metrics.
The new Top 100 Africa Podcasts list features leading podcasts produced by international media organizations, including RFI’s Reportage Afrique, France 24’s Eye on Africa, Vatican Radio’s English to Africa, DW Africa Link, BBC’s Focus on Africa, RFI’s Spotlight on Africa, and the Brookings Institution’s Foresight Africa Podcast, among others.
Africanist Press Podcasts ranks #1 on the list of top 100 Africa podcasts. According to Million Podcasts, the curated list represents “the best Africa podcasts to listen to” and includes host, booking agent, and producer contact information to facilitate collaboration with research institutions, development agencies, policymakers, and businesses interested in African developments and current affairs.
The organization states in its published materials that podcasts “are ranked based on their Apple review count, Apple and Spotify ratings, monthly listeners, activeness, subject expertise and overall authority within the niche.”
Vineet Agarwal, Founder and Manager of Million Podcasts, stated in an email to the Africanist Press editorial team on July 21: “I’m excited to share that your podcast, Africanist Press Podcast Service, has been recognized as one of the Top 100 Africa Podcasts on the web by our panel. This list is the most comprehensive ranking of Africa Podcasts online, and we’re honored to feature yours among the best.”
Since its launch in December 2023, the Africanist Press Podcast has produced over 75 episodes analyzing current events in Africa, with a particular focus on governance, human rights, social justice, history, arts, and culture. Produced at Northwestern University’s Evanston campus and sponsored by the Program of African Studies (PAS), the podcast has reached a global audience of more than 7.5 million weekly listeners in over 86 countries. It utilizes digital technologies and social media platforms, including WhatsApp, Telegram, YouTube, Facebook, Spotify, Apple, Amazon, and other online channels, to engage a diverse audience of diplomats, policymakers, academics, and the general public.
In early March 2026, the Africanist Press Podcast initiated a two-year media project to produce 100 podcast episodes and investigative reports on democracy and development in Africa. Since mid-April 2026, the project has released 11 episodes focusing on the role of education, arts, and cultural institutions in shaping Africa’s development and addressing current governance challenges. The first set of episodes in the series feature conversations moderated by Gambia-based journalist Osman Kargbo with educators, bookstore owners, librarians, publishers, artists, and historians from the Gambia, Tanzania, Egypt, South Africa, Kenya, and the United States.
The initiative is led by Dr. Chernoh Alpha Bah, editor-in-chief of Africanist Press and a Northwestern alumnus (PhD, History, 2023), and is produced by a technical and editorial team comprising Northwestern students Sofia Migaly and Daniela Morales.
